i trusted you
i trusted you.
crisp, dewy blades
of carpet grass
crunching beneath my
thudding feet.
i trusted you.
morning light on my face,
warm and yellow as
the sunflower
you once gave.
i trusted you.
brisk little breeze
tugging gently at
the pale ribbon
on the package i clutch.
i trusted you.
your shadow falls across my path.
i trusted you.
i fling it at your feet
contemptuously.
your puzzled face
annoys me.
i trusted you.
harsh light spills through
the gaps between my fingers;
a sharp crack
leaves crimson anger on your cheek.
i trusted you.
pearls are for tears.
i snatch the ring off but
the prophesy
has been fulfilled.
i -
loved you.
yours truly
